Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

2018 Schools Spectacular Choir

While at Schools Spectacular, the Laguna Street choir met Addi, who comes from Glen Alice PS. It is a very small school of just 10 students, just under 4hrs west of Newcastle. As Addi was the only one from her school in the choir, we invited her to be part of our group. By the end of Spec she had become part of our school and our students always made sure she felt included. The friendships forged at Spec are just as important as the performances and I'm so proud of the way our students welcomed Addi into our group.

Yesterday I received a package from Glen Alice PS, thanking our students for being so welcoming to Addi and the teachers and helpers who came along with her. I think it is safe to say that some lifelong friendships were forged at Spec. Our choir put in many long hours of rehearsals before Show Week and I could not be prouder of the way they conducted themselves at ever rehearsal and performance. Show Week is a very long week but our students never stopped smiling and singing. To be part of a 5500 strong performance and sing as part of a 2700 voice choir is an incredible ask and our students rose to the challenge.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

On Saturday the 10th of November, two first Lego League teams went to a competition at the Illawarra Grammar School. The theme of the competition was 'Into Orbit", which meant everything was space themed.

During the day we had to complete robotic missions and present a project. We had been working on both of these over term 3 and 4.

We had to complete as many robotic missions as we could in 2 minutes and 30 seconds. It was really hard because when we practised it at school our codes were working but when we were trying to do it during the competition we had some problems. Throughout the day we improved each time and felt more confident.

Our project was about making a greenhouse in outer space. Everyone got to speak about the project and how we planned to create the greenhouse. The other teams project was about using solar energy to power space travel.

We learnt about how rockets move, we problem solved, hypothesised and tested our hypotheses and formed scientific conclusions. We also learnt that being a great scientist involves risk-taking, problem solving and being persistent. Rocket Science was so much fun…thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us today Mr & Mrs Mergler.
Leadership by the Bay

Today our Laguna Street leaders and house captains attended the second Leadership by the Bay event. At the event which is attended by 15 schools both primary and high schools from the Sutherland Shire, students participated in activities where there they could learn about their leadership qualities and utilise these strengths in the future. They also got to hear from guest speaker Athena Savvas who inspired all students to look at the five leadership hacks. These include:

Dream big
Search for the Positives
Together is better
Find your alarm
What questions

Our leaders did an excellent job of presenting all the fantastic things they have been a part of this year where they have been able to help inspire younger students in the school. It was a fantastic day that I'm sure all our leaders will remember. I know all students that attended found the event a valuable day and are looking forward to utilising their new found skills moving into high school next year and eventually the future workforce.

Well done leaders Mrs Russell

On 25 October Stage 2 were lucky enough to visit the Wollongong Science Centre and Planetarium to begin their Term 4 Science and Technology unit on Earth and Space. We were given time to explore hands on STEM experiments using dinosaurs, fossils, illusions, motors and electricity. We also participated in a hands on show where we learnt about water. Our favourite part was visiting the Planetarium where we took a ride through space learning about meteorites, planets, galaxies and black holes.

We would definitely recommend that everyone go and visit the Science Centre!

NSW State Drama Festival

On the 25 and 26 October the Senior Drama Ensemble made their way into the Seymour Centre to perform at the prestigious NSW State Drama Festival for our school's third consecutive year in a row. This year, the students entered a dramatic original piece titled 'Safe Place'. The piece was developed by the students and Miss O'Rourke and explored themes including love, loss and hope. Our performance was received very well by the organisers of the event resulting in the ensemble being invited to perform at the VIP night of the festival. We were one of only three primary schools featured on the VIP night which is a fantastic accomplishment for everyone involved. The students performed exceptionally well at both shows and were recognised as being a stand out performance by the State Primary Drama Ensemble teacher. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Laguna Street certainly has talent!

1B Hospital Visit

1B visited the Sutherland Hospital on Tuesday 11 September. We learnt all about the people who work at the hospital and met some volunteers too. We were so surprised that volunteers didn't get paid and gave up their time from the goodness of their hearts to help the community.

We visited radiography and learnt how x-rays are taken. We visited the children's ward and the hospital school too. We met Bucky the skeleton who taught us about our bones, we met Dolly who showed us some equipment that patients may need at hospital and the most exciting part of all is we transformed into doctors and nurses by dressing up into their uniforms and using a stethoscope.

After our visit today, we know that hospitals are not a scary place, but somewhere you can go if you're feeling unwell and know that you will be looked after.

Our two Laguna Street senior debating teams competed in the 4th and final round of the Premiers Debating Challenge today the 2nd of August. Both teams did exceptionally well with Laguna Street Silver taking the win. Their topic was 'that primary schools should teach compulsory swimming classes.'

Our adjudicator for the day was impressed by the calibre of our participants stating that 'our students were as good if not better than the year 12 students she had seen.'

I am are so proud of all these students and look forward to finding out if any our teams will make the finals.
Return and Earn

3V noticed last term that lots of bottles and poppers were being thrown in the bin when we could be recycling them. So we decided to do something about it. We wanted to join the Return and Earn Scheme to raise money for Laguna Street. We tallied up how many things could have been recycled but were being thrown in the bin. We found that in just one day, 91 recyclable containers were thrown out. That is $9.10 straight in the bin that could have been spent on new things for the school.

It took us a while to work out what to do next. Eventually, we had an idea. We found a Return and Earn centre that could help us. 2 weeks ago we had Adrian from St George Recyclers come out and speak to 3V about how we could start Return and Earn at Laguna Street. He told us that he could have 2 bins delivered to school by the day of the athletics carnival.

Starting last week, volunteers from 3V went to the infants and primary playgrounds every lunch and recess to collect Return and Earn containers and teach people about what can and can’t be recycled. When the bins arrived we were able to put all of the containers into the bin, ready to be picked up this week.

There is now a recycling bin with a green lid in each playground for students to put their cans, poppers and plastic bottles in to be recycled. St George Recyclers will collect these bins every Thursday (free of charge), process them at their factory and direct deposit the money into the school account.

3V would like to thank St George Recyclers for helping us raise money for our school and save the environment by recycling our containers. We also want to thank Adrian for coming out and answering all of our questions about Return and Earn.

If you or your family would like to support LSPS you can also bring in your own containers to be included in the school collection. There will be a crate outside the 3V classroom where you can leave your eligible containers. Please make sure that containers are empty, uncrushed, unbroken and have the original label attached.

Today Wednesday the 27th of June, 4 members of the Laguna Street Silver debating went to Sutherland Public School to compete against them in round 3 of the Premier's Debating Challenge. They were given the affirmative side to debate on the topic ' That we should ban people under 18 from participating in talent shows and contests.'

Unfortunately against their amazing efforts they lost this round. They should be congratulated once again on their efforts it was no easy task. They are looking forward to their final round next term where the 2 Laguna Street teams will go head to head on home ground. We wish team gold the best on their upcoming debate at Yowie Bay PS next Wednesday.

On Thursday the 31st of May the senior debating teams attended an informative and engaging whole day training day with Mrs Russell at Bonnet Bay Public School with a number of the students from different schools in the Sutherland Shire and St George area.

On the day Laguna Street students were given strategies to utilise when preparing for their upcoming debates. They looked at how to form a structured argument and how to form an effective rebuttal. They were able to use these new learned skills in a mock debate on the day.

The students were given two challenges one of which they won, this involved them coming up with an argument to convince the audience that if Laguna Street ruled the world they would enforce a new rule. They decided that if students did well academically they should be rewarded with lollies and if the teachers did not follow the rules they would be fined by the lollipop lady.

On Thursday 24 May, the two Laguna Street senior debating teams participated in the first of four rounds of the Premier's Debating Challenge against Caringbah Public School. Both teams did an excellent job considering this was their first ever formal debate. The days results included a win by Team Gold and a close loss by Team Silver.

Both tems showed exceptional team work under pressure with only an hour to prepare and should be commended for their efforts. We look forward to the upcoming whole day training next Thursday to be held at Bonnet Bay Public School and know that with a little more training both teams will continue to grow and prepare for the next round against Woolooware Public School.
